The Global Impact of Government Aid Cuts: No time to be passive
26 February 2025

In recent days, we've witnessed a disastrous trend of government aid cuts across major donor countries, including the United States, the Netherlands, France, Belgium and the UK. These decisions are not just numbers on a balance sheet; they represent a devastating blow to millions of vulnerable people worldwide who rely on this support for their very survival.

The Ripple Effect of Aid Cuts

The US government's recent foreign aid suspension has sent shockwaves through the humanitarian sector. A survey by ICVA revealed that 67% of NGOs have received stop work orders, impacting humanitarian programmes on every continent. This sudden halt in funding is not just a temporary setback; it's a crisis with far-reaching consequences:

  • Millions of internally displaced people are losing access to lifesaving support.
  • Essential services, protection, and resettlement support are facing major reductions.
  • Women and children are at increased risk of gender-based violence, child labour and early marriage.

Meanwhile, the UK has just announced a staggering 40% cut to its aid budget. And the Netherlands has agreed a 30% cut, redirecting funds to projects that "directly contribute to Dutch interests". Belgium has followed suit with its own aid reductions of 25%. These cuts come at a time when global humanitarian needs are at a record high, exacerbated by climate change and ongoing conflicts.

The Critical Role of NGOs

In this challenging landscape, the work of NGOs has never been more crucial. These organisations are often the last line of defence for communities in crisis. However, with government funding drying up, many NGOs are facing an existential threat.

A Call to Action

Now, more than ever, we need to raise our voices against these devastating cuts. It's time to:

  1. Advocate tirelessly for the restoration of government aid budgets.
  2. Explore alternative funding sources to sustain critical programmes.
